CofE Synod Passes Covenant

With little opposition, the General Synod of the Church of England moved the adoption process for the Anglican Covenant along today. This is not the final vote on the Covenant. More comment will be forthcoming. Thinking Anglicans has more information now.

UPDATE: A statement from the No Anglican Covenant Coalition is available here.

No. The CoE did not adopt the Anglican Covenant this morning. It "considered" a draft Act of Synod to adopt the Covenant. The draft Act will now go to diocesan synods. If at least half of them vote in favour of the draft Act it will return to Synod for final approval. Only when and if this final approval is given will the CofE have adopted the Covenant. As some speakers made clear this morning they voted in favour, not because they were in favour of the Covenant, but because they wanted it considered in the dioceses before making a decision. It may well be that the majority of Synod is in favour of the Covenant, but that does not follow from the vote today. And people might change their minds before it comes back to Synod.

I think we knew this stage was not where the battle will be won or lost. Rather we now have to move to the diocese with something the covenant cannot stand -- the truth. And of course there are battles in Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Canada and USA to be fought soon. This is not even close to over.

..and now comes the hard work...Getting word around at parish level in respect of the covenant. Diocesan synod reps are not very used to their electorate telling them what they think on anything very much. Engaging the people in the parishes to let their synod reps know how they feel about it, is key.

I am delighted that enough bods in my parish were suffciently taken with my last sermon to ask me for a copy of the text. Enough people with which to have a small study group. This will be very ad hoc facilitated by myself and ...well we shall see where it goes.

From whence comes my guidance?
Are we thinking of producing some brief study guide to assist parishes in their consideration?

Mmm.. we need to work hard, realistically the dioceses generally pass what the General Synod ask for. See the Pluralist's take. More gloomy than my own view, of course!
