A short lived but worthwhile link
The Revd Dr Giles Fraser is Canon Chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral and Director of the St Paul’s Institute has published in "The Church Times" a very well done piece about the relationship of what the Church of England is doing, the so-called "covenant" and "institutional homophobia. Church Times has a subscription policy so that this site will only be open to you for a short while. I urge you to read it while you can!

Ah yes. Bishops must be a focus of unity. As if that were inherently virtuous. Perhaps we could point to the Nuremberg rallies as an example of unity that wasn't so good for, say, Jews.
Isn't this almost saying bishops must be people who are willing to exclude on the basis of consensus?
and btw, what happened to the idea of bishop as "pontifex;" i.e., "bridge-builder?" Or do we no longer expect bishops to build bridges except to those who are like themselves, or at least to those who don't make them uneasy?
In Uganda a bishop was stripped of his episcopal dignity for building--or attempting to build--a bridge to gay people. And I STILL haven't heard a word from Lambeth about how detestably Bishop Christopher has been treated.tragglad
Danny,
Thanks for visiting and commenting. A couple thoughts.
First bishops are people certainly and can err. The 39 Articles so beloved by conservatives note that councils of the church which at that time were made up only of bishops, "can err and have erred."
In theory, given the discernment process and the passage through both deacon's and priest's offices, yes we do expect them to be exceptionally virtuous. A short look at the marital record of ACNA's bishops will demonstrate that the filter is somewhat damaged.
Thanks again!

HI Jim.
I'm not holding out for conspicuous virtue. But isn't it reasonable to expect bishops to know enough at least to realize that the Gospel teaches us not to slam the door in anybody's face?
Or do we just use the Gospel to make ourselves feel better about ourselves?
Thanks again for the amazing article. Really its a great thought. I appreciate with you. and you are my favourite writer. I am a big fan of your creativity. Thedumpscentre//AZ-104//PMP
